This fall, “TAKE OFF! with The Savvy Stews” lands in daytime on Destination America.
“TAKE OFF!” encourages viewers to travel like a pro by inspiring the novice traveler as well as the jet-setter to try an alternate route.
Stow your carry-on bags and fasten your seatbelts because it’s time to fly! Flight attendants Gailen David and Bobby Laurie are landing on televisions across America with a new travel series that inspires travelers to make the most of their trip and explore hidden gems in a destination’s backyard.
Gailen David and Bobby Laurie, better known as “The Savvy Stews,” had their flight paths cross in 2010 at a conference connecting travel bloggers.
“We were both blogging about the life of a flight attendant and our crazy experiences at 35,000ft, but also realized we had the same mission to inform travelers how to make their experience on the road easier, stress-free and more civilized based on our experiences… so we decided to work together,” explained Bobby Laurie. “That’s when we started called ourselves The Savvy Stews.”
Combined, the Stews have over 40 years of hospitality and airline industry experience making them the only travel hosts on television with direct, hands on, industry skills and knowledge.
The Savvy Stews’ show might be new, but the duo isn’t new to television. “We started our website [SavvyStews.com] and filled it with tips and insider information that we had access to and saw an amazing response so we thought we’d take it a step further and we contacted some morning talk shows about going on their show and teaching their audience how to travel like the pros do,” said Laurie. “We picked up the phone, called any news producers we could find, and pitched them idea. We did all of this ourselves,” Gailen David added. The first show to give the guys a shot was “Daytime” a national lifestyle and entertainment show filmed out of Tampa, FL. The Stews still appear on the show as monthly travel contributors.
Additionally, coining the catchphrase “travel like we do,” The Savvy Stews are now entering their second year appearing bi-weekly on the nationally syndicated morning show “The Daily Buzz” from destinations around the world. “After a few years we decided to take our travel segments out of the studio and on the road with us. We travel the world and send reports to The Daily Buzz with destination highlights, travel tips and special deals for their viewers. We always find so many amazing things to do and places to see throughout our travels that it’s sometimes hard to convey how fascinating everything is in two minutes, but with the show, we have more time to let viewers experience the journey with us,” explained David.
“TAKE OFF! with The Savvy Stews” will share the adventures David and Laurie encourage viewers to have in various cities in America and beyond, from tasting the local cuisine, to tackling the boldest activities, seeking the new thing to try, and taking the road less traveled; because they want to experience the discovery along with the viewers at home.
“TAKE OFF!” has been cleared to air this fall on Destination America and will be the only travel series releasing new episodes in daytime television. “TAKE OFF!” will air Thursdays at 8 a.m. EST / 5 a.m. PST starting October 2, 2014.
Destination America, part of Discovery Communications, the world’s #1 nonfiction media company reaching more than 2 billion cumulative subscribers in 220 countries and territories, is the only network to celebrate the people, places, and stories of the United States and features travel, food, adventure, home, and natural history, with original series.
“TAKE OFF!” is produced by Savvy Omnimedia with April Carter, Gailen David and Bobby Laurie serving as executive producers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”5626″ css_animation=”left-to-right” alignment=”center” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”medium”][vc_column_text]

At age 10, Gailen David started a travel agency in his bedroom and began planning trips for neighbors and business associates of his parents. Eastern Airlines became aware of his travel enterprise and took him under their wing; supporting his travel business, including him in Eastern events such as press conferences, receptions and even aircraft retirement ceremonies such as the farewell to the Lockheed Electra.
His dream to become a flight attendant came true when he was hired by American Airlines in 1987. As a purser, he was based in New York, Washington, San Francisco and eventually Miami where he lives today. Soon he was tapped by American to create instructional videos and deliver motivational seminars to his colleagues throughout the airline\’s system.
His “Jetiquette…The Customer Experience and You” training program was recognized by Travel Weekly Magazine and received “The Magellan Award” in 2008.Gailen\’s from-the-heart program focused on showing front-line workers how valuable they really are and shared his own methods for recognizing and savoring the many rewards that come from making the travel experience special for someone else.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”5448″ css_animation=”appear” alignment=”center” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”5446″ css_animation=”left-to-right” alignment=”center” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]
Bobby Laurie’s background in the travel industry dates back to November 2005 when he was initially hired as a flight attendant for US Airways Express. Shortly thereafter he left the company to become a flight attendant for US Airways and later an Analyst in In-Flight Policies & Procedures. In 2007 he left US Airways to return to life as a flight attendant at a new domestic carrier.
In 2009 Bobby Laurie created a travel blog that was designed to collect and journal the experiences he encountered while working as a flight attendant. Because of the catchy name and his unbelievable, yet true stories, the blog became widely read among airline and industry enthusiasts. In 2010 a collection of his most popular articles and journals from his website were published into a book titled “Planely Speaking: Inflight Insight from Thirty Thousand Feet.”
Later that year, Laurie posted an article to his website about an outburst from a flight attendant at JetBlue Airways, which gained national attention and sparked conversation. Laurie provided insight into the career and lifestyle of a flight attendant and also offered his sympathies to the JetBlue employee. The media immediately took notice and booked Laurie as a travel correspondent because of his insider knowledge and means of explaining the industry.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″]
